The Heart of our Problem
Malcolm Muggeridge, the English journalist, once remarked “The depravity of man is at once the most empirically verifiable reality but at the same time the most intellectually resisted fact.” We are living in times where the distinction between right and wrong is almost non-visible. However, what is more shocking is not the fact there are many who aren't bothered about this distinction anymore, but the fact there are millions, for whom something else is more important than this "very distinction" which makes life worth living.
For some toddlers, gaining access to the broken toy of another toddler is more important than his/her own costly toy.
For some school going children, gaining one-upmanship at class is more important than preserving an unblemished face free from a bloody nose and black eyes.
For some college going teens, gazing into a smartphone is more important than looking into the eyes of his/her friend who is talking right in front of them.
For some office going professionals, a small hike in salary is more important than preserving dignity by refusing to rub the shoes of his/her manager.
For some corporate leaders, a small increase in margin is more important than their decision to fire a 1000 employees all of a sudden. For some unemployed citizens, their government's decision to bomb the neighboring country is more important than filling his/her stomach with even one meal a day.
For some suicide bombers, killing people in the name of God is more important than their very own life.
Why? Why do we experience such madness? Why? Why do we witness so much divorce? Why? Why is there so much rebellion against every known authority? Why? Why are we so blind sometimes and miss to see the obvious needs around us? Why? What prevents our head from listening to our heart sometimes? Why? Why is there so much evil in this world? Why, why?
Perhaps, the answer to the questions above can be found if only we could rephrase the question a little differently and ask, "Why? why there is so much evil within my own heart?" After all, the heart of our problem is the problem of the human heart. Isn't it? Please share your comments.
You Splendidly wrote the bitter truth . Espacillay the line " Why there is so much evil within my own heart ?"
